Campo Arqueológico Monte Albán Parking Area
The main parking area at Monte Albán sits at 6,400 feet overlooking the sprawling Oaxaca Valley, with space for maybe 20 rigs including larger overlanders. The site officially closes at 5 PM, but the gate stays open and locals know overlanders camp here regularly — just stay quiet and pack out everything. Zero facilities beyond the visitor center restrooms during day hours, but the views are worth it and security is solid with regular patrols.
Access is 6 miles up a winding paved road from Oaxaca city center. The final approach has some tight switchbacks that’ll test longer rigs, but any vehicle can make it. Best in dry season (November through April) when morning fog clears early for photography. Gate staff are cool with overnight stays as long as you’re self-contained and gone before tour buses arrive around 9 AM.
