Ruta del Mezcal Guerrerense Mountain Circuit
Guerrero's secret mezcal mountain trail
The dirt roads connecting Guerrero’s traditional mezcal villages climb through some of Mexico’s most rugged sierra terrain, where Zapotec families still harvest wild agave and fire clay ovens with oak. This 120-mile circuit links distilleries in Chilapa, Tixtla, and remote mountain settlements accessible only by 4WD, following colonial mule trails carved into cliffsides. The notorious section between Chilapa and Acatepec demands technical driving through loose shale switchbacks with thousand-foot drop-offs and no guardrails.
Difficult-rated for good reason — several creek fords run year-round, and the mining road past Tixtla requires winch-ready recovery gear for the steeper descents. Carry extra fuel; the mountain pueblos have basic supplies but no gas stations. Dry season (November-April) offers the safest travel, though summer rains create spectacular waterfalls along the route. The cultural experience is unmatched — family distilleries welcome visitors and the mezcal here rivals anything from Oaxaca. Plan three days minimum to properly taste your way through the mountains.
