Ruta del Mezcal Oaxaqueño Backcountry Circuit

Extreme mountain tracks through mezcal country.

Expert

The Ruta del Mezcal Oaxaqueño Backcountry Circuit connects the isolated mezcal-producing villages of Santiago Matatlán, San Luis del Río, and Mitla through 95 kilometers of punishing mountain tracks that few tourists ever see. This route follows centuries-old burro trails converted to rough jeep roads, climbing through pine forests and descending into desert valleys where wild agave grows on impossible slopes. The most challenging section crosses the Sierra de Tlacolula via an unnamed pass at 2,800 meters, where the track becomes a barely-navigable boulder field requiring careful line choice and momentum.

This is expert-level terrain demanding experienced drivers, rock sliders, and aggressive tires — stock vehicles won’t make it. Rainy season turns sections into impassable mud bogs; dry season brings dust that’ll choke your air filter in hours. Carry tools, spare parts, and emergency supplies; help is days away if something breaks. But the rewards run deeper than scenery — you’ll taste centuries-old mezcal traditions in villages where Spanish is still a second language, and camp in mountains that feel untouched by the modern world.
