Sierra de San Luis Potosí Mining Heritage Circuit

Silver mining ghost towns and high desert solitude.

Moderate

The Sierra de San Luis Potosí Mining Heritage Circuit winds through 180 kilometers of some of Mexico’s most storied mining country, where abandoned silver extraction sites and crumbling haciendas tell the tale of colonial wealth and modern abandonment. The route threads between Real de Catorce and Matehuala via the old mining roads, crossing the high desert plateau at over 2,500 meters elevation. Key waypoints include the Cerro de San Pedro ghost town, the Real de Catorce tunnel approach, and the challenging ascent to Estación Catorce where the old railway once carried silver ore to the coast.

This is solid intermediate territory requiring high-clearance 4WD and experience with loose rock and steep grades. The mountain passes can be treacherous in winter, and summer heat makes the desert crossings brutal — spring and fall offer the best conditions. Carry extra fuel, water, and recovery gear; cell service vanishes for long stretches. The payoff is stepping into Mexico’s mining past, camping under star-drunk desert skies, and experiencing backcountry solitude that feels like another century.
