Pacific Coast Baja Divide
Ultimate Baja peninsula traverse
The Baja Divide cuts through the heart of the peninsula on mining roads, ranch tracks, and forgotten military routes that most tourists never see. Starting from the Tecate border crossing, this epic traverse follows the Sierra de Juárez and Sierra de San Pedro Mártir before dropping into the Vizcaíno Desert and threading through countless arroyos to reach La Paz. You’ll cross the infamous Cataviña Boulder Field, navigate the volcanic landscape around Santa Rosalía, and tackle the notorious Agua Verde descent — a technical rock garden that has claimed more than a few oil pans.
This is expert-level overlanding requiring full expedition setup with extensive spares, recovery gear, and at least 300 miles of fuel range. Summer is brutal; run it November through March when daytime temps stay reasonable. No permits needed, but Mexican liability insurance is mandatory. Water is scarce between towns — plan accordingly. What you get is the real Baja: empty beaches, ancient cave paintings, and desert solitude that makes the Rubicon look like a mall parking lot.
