Donegal Highland Green Road Network
Forgotten drovers' roads through Donegal wilderness
These forgotten tracks once connected isolated mountain communities across northwest Donegal, carrying everything from cattle to contraband through the Derryveagh and Glendowan mountains. The network links Glenveagh National Park to the Atlantic coast via grass-covered lanes that haven’t seen regular traffic since the 1960s. Stone bridges cross mountain streams while the roads climb through terrain so wild that golden eagles and red deer are common sights. Many sections follow ancient clan boundaries marked by standing stones.
Difficulty varies from easy gravel stretches to challenging rocky climbs requiring 4WD and careful navigation. Some routes are barely two-wheel tracks through deep heather and bog cotton. Weather is unpredictable — carry rain gear and warm clothes even in summer. No permits needed, but respect private land boundaries and farming operations. Several routes offer wild camping spots with stunning views across Donegal Bay, making this one of Ireland’s last true wilderness driving experiences.
