Jefferson County Strip Mine Reclamation Trail
Coal country's technical reclamation challenge
This unmarked trail system winds through 40 years of strip mine reclamation in Jefferson County, where massive earthmoving operations left behind a moonscape of steep spoil piles and deep ponds. The main route climbs through areas where 200-foot seams of coal were extracted, creating technical obstacles on loose shale and compacted mine spoil, with the toughest section around the flooded highwall near Hammondsville where the old dragline operations created near-vertical climbs.
Difficult terrain requiring experienced drivers with winch-equipped 4WD — the loose shale and steep grades will challenge traction and skill. Some water holes are deceptively deep from old mine settling ponds. Best accessed spring through fall when spoil piles aren’t muddy. No official permits but respect private mining company property boundaries. It’s an industrial wasteland slowly returning to nature, offering unique technical challenges in Ohio’s coal heritage landscape.
