Seneca County Sand Prairie Heritage Circuit
Glass sand quarries meet Ohio's lost prairie
Drive through ghost quarries where Libbey-Owens-Ford once mined premium glass sand, leaving behind a moonscape of sandy ridges and reclaimed wetlands. This 18-mile loop threads through Seneca County’s restored sand prairie — Ohio’s rarest ecosystem — via maintenance roads through Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area and adjacent state lands. The route crosses Wolf Creek twice on low concrete fords that become impassable during spring floods, and navigates through restored oak savannas where elk once roamed.
Stock high-clearance vehicles handle most conditions, but the creek crossings and soft sand patches after rain demand attention. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though hunting seasons require hunter orange October through January. No permits needed, but respect seasonal closures. Multiple primitive camping spots exist on state land boundaries. You’ll experience Ohio’s forgotten prairie landscape and understand why early settlers called this region ‘the great black swamp’s highland cousin.’
