Shenandoah National Park Rapidan Camp Trailhead
This well-marked trailhead provides access to President Herbert Hoover’s restored fishing retreat along the Rapidan River. The moderate 4.1-mile round-trip hike follows old fire roads through mature hardwood forest, passing several stream crossings and the ruins of additional camp buildings. The main cabin complex sits in a peaceful clearing beside the rushing Rapidan, with interpretive signs detailing the site’s presidential history from 1929-1933.
Access via Skyline Drive requires a park entrance fee. The trailhead sits at Milam Gap with a small parking area that fills quickly on weekends during peak foliage season. Trail can be muddy after rain, and stream crossings may require rock-hopping during high water. Open year-round but Skyline Drive sections may close during winter weather.
