Lake Drummond Natural Spring
This natural spring feeds into Lake Drummond, the centerpiece of Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. The spring produces clear, cool water year-round, though filtering is essential due to tannins from surrounding cypress and tupelo swamp. Access requires either a 4.5-mile hike on Washington Ditch Trail or launching a canoe from the boat ramp. The area remains wild and isolated, with black bears and cottonmouth snakes common.
Spring flow remains consistent even during drought periods when lake levels drop. The trail to reach it on foot can be muddy and poorly marked, requiring good navigation skills. Mosquitoes are brutal from May through September, making spring and late fall the best seasons for collection.
