Great Dismal Swamp Washington Ditch Explorer
Washington's swamp road through haunted wetlands
Washington Ditch cuts a ruler-straight line through the heart of Great Dismal Swamp, following the route surveyed by George Washington himself in 1763 for a canal that would drain the massive wetland. The raised dirt road runs for 11 miles through black water, cypress stands, and Spanish moss-draped tupelo gums—the same landscape that sheltered escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad for over a century. Lake Drummond sits at the route’s midpoint, a mysterious 3,100-acre lake that defies explanation in the middle of the swamp’s highest ground.
Any stock vehicle can handle this easy gravel road, but the real challenge is mental—the swamp plays tricks on GPS and compasses, and cell service dies within the first mile. Spring through fall brings mosquito clouds that will test your sanity, while winter offers clearer air and better wildlife viewing. Bring plenty of insect repellent, water, and a paper map as backup navigation. Camping is prohibited, but the nearby towns of Suffolk and Chesapeake offer services. This isn’t about technical driving—it’s about experiencing one of America’s most haunted landscapes.
