False Cape State Park Beach Access Road

Remote wilderness beach via challenging sand track

Difficult

The False Cape State Park Beach Access Road stretches 6 miles of deep sand driving from the North Carolina border to Virginia’s most remote state park. This route follows the barrier island’s bayside edge through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, where wild horses still roam and loggerhead turtles nest. The final 2 miles test tire pressure management and momentum control — sugar sand sections that’ll bog down anything without proper technique. Environmental education center ruins at mile 4 mark the halfway point to wilderness beaches that see more dolphins than people.

High-clearance vehicles with 4WD required, plus the knowledge to air down to 15-20 PSI for sand flotation. Summer brings biting insects and afternoon thunderstorms, making spring and fall ideal for exploration. No permits needed for day trips, but camping requires advance reservations. Bring extra water, recovery gear, and a portable air compressor — cell service is nonexistent past the refuge entrance. You’ll earn access to Virginia’s wildest coastline and understand why False Cape remains the state’s most challenging beach destination.
