George Washington National Forest Forest Road 76 Potts Mountain Ridge
Potts Mountain's rocky spine challenge
Forest Road 76 cuts a demanding path along the spine of Potts Mountain, where centuries of Appalachian weather have carved deep ruts and exposed limestone shelves that’ll test your line choice. The route climbs steadily from Sweet Springs Valley through dense hardwood forests, with the notorious Rocky Gap section presenting a series of boulder-filled washouts that demand careful wheel placement. From the ridgeline, you’ll catch glimpses of the James River Valley stretching east and West Virginia’s coal country rolling north.
This is no Sunday drive — expect moderate difficulty with several technical sections requiring high clearance and 4WD engagement. A stock Jeep or pickup can handle it, but skid plates are wise given the sharp rocks. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though winter snow can make the route impassable. No permits required, but dispersed camping is allowed along designated spurs. Bring tools for trail maintenance and plenty of water — the nearest services are 20 miles away in Covington.
