Outer Banks Portsmouth Island Vehicle Ferry Route
Ghost town barrier island accessible by ferry
Portsmouth Island sits at the southern tip of Cape Lookout National Seashore, reachable only by private ferry from Ocracoke or Atlantic. This 16-mile barrier island was once home to a thriving fishing village that’s now a preserved ghost town, complete with a post office, church, and cemetery slowly being reclaimed by sand and salt spray. The ferry dumps you onto Sheep Island Slew, from where you can drive the island’s entire beach front or explore the village ruins via sandy two-tracks through maritime forest.
Any 4WD will handle the sand if you air down properly — the real challenge is logistics and tide timing. Ferry service runs seasonally through licensed operators like Portsmouth Island ATV Excursions, requiring advance booking and weather cooperation. Spring and fall offer the best balance of decent weather and fewer crowds. Pack everything including fuel, water, and emergency gear. What you get is one of the East Coast’s last truly wild barrier islands.
