Forest Service Road 479 Mount Pleasant Ridge Loop
Technical granite climb to radio tower views
Forest Service Road 479 winds up Mount Pleasant’s eastern flank through dense rhododendron thickets and over granite outcrops that’ll test your line choice. The route climbs from Wayah Road through a series of steep switchbacks and rock ledges to reach the radio tower complex at 4,800 feet, where clear days reveal the Smoky Mountains stretching to the horizon. The infamous “Devil’s Backbone” section around mile 3 features loose shale over granite slabs that have claimed more than a few oil pans.
This is solid intermediate territory requiring high-clearance 4WD and good tires — the rock gardens are unforgiving and the drop-offs real. Best tackled May through October when the road isn’t gated for ice. No permits needed, but fuel up in Franklin and carry recovery gear. The payoff is legitimate wilderness solitude and some of the finest ridge-running in the southern Appalachians.
