Amboy Crater National Natural Landmark

Point of Interest

This symmetrical cinder cone rises 250 feet above the desert floor, formed during a volcanic eruption roughly 6,000 years ago. The crater rim offers panoramic views across the Mojave and down into the 300-foot-wide crater bowl. A well-marked 3-mile round-trip trail leads from the old Route 66 roadbed to the summit, passing through a stark lava field dotted with barrel cacti and desert ironwood.

Access is from historic Route 66 near the ghost town of Amboy. The trail is entirely exposed with no shade, making early morning or late afternoon visits essential during warmer months. Summer temperatures can exceed 120°F. The lava rock surface retains heat well into the evening, and sturdy boots are recommended for the sharp volcanic terrain.
