Tsali Recreation Area Mountain Bike Trail Vehicle Access Network

Service roads above Fontana's hidden corners

Moderate

Most folks know Tsali for the mountain biking, but the maintenance road network behind the scenes tells a different story — miles of gravel and dirt service roads that wind through second-growth forest above Fontana Lake’s northern shore. The main arterial, Forest Service Road 521, connects four distinct loop systems originally built for timber access in the 1960s, now used for trail maintenance and emergency access. The crown jewel is the Upper Mouse Branch Road that climbs to a ridgeline overlook where you can see clear across Fontana Lake to the Smoky Mountains.

Most of this network is moderate difficulty, suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though the Upper Mouse Branch climb gets steep and loose after rain. Spring through fall are your best bet when the forest service keeps gates unlocked for maintenance season. No camping allowed within the recreation area boundaries, but dispersed camping is legal on adjacent Cherokee National Forest lands. Bring a Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Map — some spurs are seasonally closed for wildlife protection, and the signage isn’t always current.
