Cape Fear River Bottomland Heritage Circuit

Rice fields, earthworks, and river history.

Moderate

The Cape Fear River Bottomland Heritage Circuit follows old plantation roads and logging tracks through some of the most historically significant terrain in the Carolinas, where you’ll navigate between 200-year-old rice field embankments and Civil War fort remnants while dodging the occasional alligator sunning on the sand roads. This 18-mile loop connects multiple historic sites including the ruins of Orton Plantation and Confederate earthworks, with the highlight being the crossing at Brunswick Town where you can see cannon emplacements that once defended the river approach to Wilmington.

The sandy terrain is surprisingly technical after rain, requiring 4WD with good ground clearance and momentum to avoid getting stuck in the sugar sand. Summer brings oppressive humidity and mosquitoes, but also the best water levels for river access. Winter offers comfortable temperatures and clearer views through the cypress swamps. You’ll find primitive camping along the river, and the route connects to the Lower Cape Fear River Program’s interpretive sites for those wanting to dig deeper into the area’s complex history of rice cultivation, slavery, and coastal warfare.
