McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area Rabbit Valley Dispersed Camping
Scattered primitive sites across rolling red dirt terrain dotted with sagebrush and juniper. The area sits along I-70’s Rabbit Valley exit, offering easy highway access to genuine backcountry camping. Sites are self-selected wherever you can fit your rig without damaging vegetation — popular spots include gentle ridges with views toward the Book Cliffs. No facilities whatsoever, pack it all out. Gets busy during fossil hunting season when paleontology groups descend on the nearby quarries.
Take Exit 2 from I-70 and follow rough dirt roads north or south to find your spot. Road conditions vary from decent gravel near the highway to rocky two-track further out. High-clearance recommended for anything beyond the first quarter mile. Strong winds are common — stake everything down.
