Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve
A 760,000-year-old terminal lake ringed by bizarre tufa towers — limestone spires formed by underwater springs mixing with the alkaline water. The South Tufa area has a boardwalk and interpretive trail through the formations, while Navy Beach offers closer lake access and fewer crowds. The water’s twice as salty as the ocean and supports trillions of brine shrimp that feed millions of migratory birds.
Open year-round but best in late afternoon for photography when the light hits the towers. Winter brings snow and icy conditions. The access road is paved but can be rough. There’s no camping at the reserve itself, but plenty of dispersed options nearby on Forest Service land.
