Fort Mountain State Park
Perched at 2,800 feet on Fort Mountain’s ridge, this state park offers a mix of RV sites and primitive tent areas surrounded by dense hardwood forest. The ancient stone wall that gives the mountain its name runs along the summit — worth the short hike for the mystery and views across north Georgia’s mountains. Sites are well-spaced with fire rings and picnic tables, though the primitive loop fills up on weekends during leaf season.
Access is straightforward via paved park roads, but the real value is proximity to Forest Service trails in the surrounding Chattahoochee. Cohutta Wilderness trailheads are 30 minutes north, and you’re positioned for runs into the Conasauga River area. Water and bathhouses available, but cell service is spotty on the mountain.
