Sumter National Forest Yellow Branch Falls Gorge Technical Circuit

This gnarly granite playground drops into one of South Carolina’s deepest gorges where Yellow Branch Creek carved a 200-foot chasm through billion-year-old bedrock. The route navigates house-sized boulders and granite ledges that’ll test your spotter’s patience, with several mandatory winch points where the trail disappears over cliff edges. The payoff is reaching the base of 60-foot Yellow Branch Falls, hidden in a cathedral of granite walls where few people ever venture.

Expert difficulty requiring serious rock-crawling skills and proper equipment — lockers front and rear, steel bumpers, winch, and good skid plates are mandatory. Even built rigs take body damage here. Best attempted during dry conditions from late summer through fall when water levels drop. No permits required but tell someone your plans — cell service dies once you drop into the gorge. This isn’t about mileage, it’s about surviving some of the Southeast’s most technical terrain. Come prepared for recovery operations and maybe camping if things go sideways.
