Sumter National Forest Jones Gap Fire Tower Ridge Circuit

CCC stonework meets Blue Ridge vistas

Moderate

The old CCC road snakes through mountain laurel thickets so dense they form green tunnels over your windshield, climbing toward Jones Gap Fire Tower through some of the most remote terrain in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. Built in the 1930s, this access route follows original Civilian Conservation Corps engineering, with hand-laid stone retaining walls still holding the grade after nearly a century. The final push to the tower requires navigating around washouts and granite outcrops that have claimed more than a few oil pans from overconfident drivers.

This is moderate technical terrain requiring high clearance and 4WD for the final mile to the tower base. Stock vehicles with skid plates can handle it, but the combination of loose shale, exposed granite, and steep grades demands respect. Best tackled April through October when laurel blooms and clear skies maximize the payoff. No permits needed, but the trailhead fills fast on weekends. Bring your own water and fuel up in Marietta before heading in. The view from the tower stretches from Paris Mountain to the North Carolina peaks—worth every scraped rock slider.
