Broad River Shoals Sand Mining Heritage Circuit

The Broad River cuts through solid granite bedrock in the South Carolina Piedmont, creating natural shoals that attracted commercial sand mining operations for decades. This circuit follows the remnants of heavy equipment access roads that wind through bottomland hardwood forests to reach multiple granite shoals along a 12-mile stretch of river. Key waypoints include the ruins of the old Parr Shoals Dam and the abandoned Monticello Mill site, where massive concrete foundations still stand among towering sycamores and river birch.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent rains – the sandy tracks can become soft and rutted after storms. Stock SUV with high clearance handles most conditions, though 4WD helps in muddy sections near the river. Best accessed spring through fall when water levels are predictable. No permits required, but respect private property boundaries clearly marked throughout. The route offers excellent primitive camping on high ground above the floodplain and some of the best granite shoals fishing in the state.
