Adirondack Park Raquette River Wild Forest Road
Historic logging roads through Adirondack wilderness
The Raquette River Wild Forest Road system winds through 1.4 million acres of Adirondack wilderness, following century-old logging roads that once hauled massive white pines to the mills. Starting from Tupper Lake, the network of interconnected forest roads leads to forgotten logging camps, pristine beaver ponds, and the headwaters of the Raquette River itself. The main challenge comes at Bog River Falls, where the old cordwood road crosses a washed-out timber bridge requiring careful navigation around exposed granite ledges.
This is moderate terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD for the deeper sections, especially after spring runoff floods the low-lying areas. Best accessed May through October when the seasonal gates are open. No permits required, but respect the ‘Forever Wild’ designation—this is dispersed camping country with fire rings from the logging era still scattered throughout. Expect spotty cell service and pack everything in. The payoff is solitude that feels like stepping back into the great north woods of the 1800s.
