Finger Lakes Trail East Hill Road Circuit
Finger Lakes ridge runner's nightmare
East Hill Road wasn’t built for modern traffic – it was carved by farmers in the 1800s who needed to haul produce between the valleys, and it shows in every loose shale switchback and creek-carved gully. The route climbs aggressively from Skaneateles Lake up onto the ridge system that defines the Finger Lakes, offering spectacular views across multiple lakes before dropping into technical descents where the local shale breaks loose under your tires. The notorious “Devil’s Staircase” section near Spafford has claimed more oil pans than anyone wants to count, and the creek crossing at Carpenter Falls requires commitment when spring runoff is heavy.
This is difficult terrain that demands experienced drivers with rock sliders and skid plates – the shale will find every vulnerable spot on your undercarriage. Late summer through early fall offers the best conditions when creek levels drop, though mud season in spring can make sections impassable for weeks. No permits required, but camping options are limited to established campgrounds in the area. You’ll experience some of New York’s most dramatic topography and understand why the Iroquois considered these ridges sacred ground.
