Hurricane Creek Park to Monte Sano State Park Ridge Connection
CCC roads linking north Alabama's limestone ridges
This forgotten connection between Hurricane Creek Park and Monte Sano State Park follows Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps roads across the limestone ridges north of Huntsville. The route winds through abandoned quarry sites and past the ruins of 1930s CCC camps, climbing through mixed hardwood forests to emerge on exposed limestone ledges with commanding views of the Tennessee Valley. The most challenging section navigates a series of washed-out switchbacks near the old Fern Cave entrance, where decades of runoff have carved deep ruts through the shale substrate.
This moderate trail requires high-clearance 4WD for the technical limestone ledges and erosion damage, though stock vehicles can handle most sections in dry conditions. Avoid during wet weather when the clay sections become impassable. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, with spectacular wildflower displays in April and May. No permits required, but respect private property boundaries marked along the route. Dispersed camping is available at several cleared areas along the ridgeline, making this an excellent weekend exploration for those seeking Alabama’s hidden mountain terrain.
