William B. Bankhead National Forest Forest Road 210 Clear Creek Gorge Technical Challenge
Alabama's gnarliest gorge crawl demands respect.
Forest Road 210 descends into Clear Creek Gorge, one of Alabama’s most technically demanding routes through the Bankhead’s limestone canyon country. The trail drops 800 feet in three miles, navigating house-sized boulders, off-camber ledges, and four major creek crossings that turn treacherous after heavy rain. The infamous “Washing Machine” section at mile 2.1 requires precise wheel placement between car-sized rocks while navigating a 90-degree left turn over running water.
This is expert-level wheeling that demands lockers, armor, and recovery gear. Wet limestone becomes glass-slick, making spring the worst season despite good water flow. Late fall through winter offers the best rock conditions, though flash floods remain a real danger. No camping allowed in the gorge itself due to flood risk. Many rigs don’t make it through without winch assistance—scout every obstacle and bring backup plans. The reward is Alabama’s most spectacular canyon scenery and some of the Southeast’s hardest legitimate 4×4 challenges.
