Tyger River Gorge Mining Road
Granite gorge mining remnants
This abandoned mining access road traces the South Tyger River through a granite gorge where 19th-century quarrying operations extracted building stone for railroad construction. The route begins at Cowpens National Battlefield’s back boundary and winds 6 miles through second-growth forest to reach the old Limestone Springs quarry site, now flooded and home to massive granite boulders that create Class III rapids. Rock cairns mark the way past overgrown equipment and concrete footings, while the river provides constant soundtrack through narrow canyon sections.
Difficult terrain with loose rock, off-camber sections, and one mandatory water crossing where spring floods have washed out the original bridge abutments. Requires experienced drivers with rock sliders and skid plates – stock vehicles will get body damage. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, avoiding summer heat and winter ice on wet granite. No services for 15 miles in any direction, so carry recovery gear and extra water. The payoff is solitude in some of the most rugged terrain in the SC Piedmont, plus excellent primitive camping spots along the river.
