Poinsett State Park CCC Legacy Trail
Following Depression-era CCC roads through laurel thickets.
Built by CCC crews in the 1930s, this 12-mile road network winds through some of the most unusual terrain in South Carolina’s Sandhills region. The route connects original CCC camp sites through dense mountain laurel thickets that bloom spectacular white and pink each May. The highlight is the Carolina Bay crossing at mile 6, where the road fords a seasonal wetland on a causeway built from hand-placed stones by Depression-era workers.
Easy to moderate difficulty makes this accessible to stock high-clearance vehicles, though narrow passages between laurel thickets will test your spotting skills. Seasonal flooding can close the bay crossing from December through March. Best visited during laurel bloom in May or fall colors in November. No permits required, and the original CCC picnic areas still offer great camping spots. You’ll follow the same routes that young men used to reach work sites while building what became South Carolina’s first state park.
