Bull Sluice Lake Trail

Rock crawling to a remote mountain lake

Difficult

Bull Sluice Lake sits at the end of a gnarly technical trail that’ll test your breakover angles and differential locks through the Andrew Pickens district. The route follows old logging roads and creek beds, with the infamous Bull Sluice Rapids roaring just downstream — the same Class IV whitewater that’s claimed kayaks and rafts for decades. You’ll navigate tight switchbacks between granite boulders and ford Chattooga River tributaries that can turn nasty after rain, especially at the final creek crossing before the lake access.

This isn’t a trail for stock vehicles — you need real 4WD with skid plates, recovery points, and ideally lockers for the rock gardens. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, but check water levels before attempting creek crossings. No permits required, but dispersed camping is limited to established sites only. The payoff is worth the punishment: a pristine mountain lake where you can hear the thunder of Bull Sluice echoing through the gorge while you set up camp under old-growth hemlocks.
