Sumter National Forest Enoree Ranger District Fire Tower Road Complex
Piedmont backcountry fire tower network
The Enoree Ranger District holds some of the most remote backcountry in South Carolina’s Piedmont region, where old Forest Service fire tower roads snake through dense hardwood forests and creek bottoms. These unmaintained double-track roads connect a network of wildlife food plots, abandoned fire towers, and hunting camps scattered across 158,000 acres of public land. The main spine follows the old Forest Road 364 system, crossing multiple creek drainages including Fairforest Creek and threading between steep ridges where wild turkey and whitetail deer are common.
This is moderate 4WD territory requiring high clearance for creek crossings and muddy sections, especially after rain. The roads can get sketchy in wet conditions with red clay becoming slick as ice. Best tackled spring through fall when creek levels are manageable. No permits needed but respect hunting seasons – wear orange during deer season. Multiple primitive camping opportunities exist along ridgetops. You’ll find solitude and genuine backcountry experience just an hour from Greenville or Columbia.
