Painted Desert Inn National Historic Landmark
Built in 1924 as a trading post and expanded by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this adobe structure houses original Hopi murals by artist Fred Kabotie and serves as both museum and viewpoint. The inn overlooks the Painted Desert’s layered badlands where iron oxide and manganese create bands of red, purple, and yellow across the landscape. Inside displays cover Route 66 history, Harvey Company hospitality, and Southwestern Native American culture.
Located at Kachina Point, 2 miles north of I-40 via the Painted Desert entrance road. Open year-round with seasonal hour variations. The building provides shade and restrooms, making it an essential stop during summer desert crossings. Best photography occurs during golden hour when the light amplifies the desert’s natural pigmentation.
