Crazy Horse Memorial Carving in Progress
This colossal mountain carving depicts Lakota warrior Crazy Horse pointing over the sacred Black Hills, designed to be 641 feet wide and 563 feet high when complete. The face alone spans 87 feet — larger than all four presidents on Mount Rushmore combined. Blasting and carving continue year-round, and visitors can watch the work from multiple overlooks while exploring the cultural center and museum.
Located 17 miles southwest of Mount Rushmore, the memorial draws heavy summer crowds but offers plenty of parking and viewing areas. The museum houses extensive Native American artifacts and rotating art exhibits. Evening laser light shows illuminate the carving during summer months, creating a dramatic spectacle against the granite face.
