Wave Rock Formation Hyden
Wave Rock rises like a massive granite tsunami about to crash, its curved face stretching 110 meters long and 15 meters high. The distinctive wave shape comes from chemical weathering along a horizontal granite seam, creating vertical streaks of red, yellow, and grey from iron oxide staining. A concrete dam wall was built along the base in the 1920s to collect rainwater runoff for the nearby town of Hyden.
Located 4 kilometers east of Hyden town, Wave Rock is accessible via sealed roads suitable for any vehicle. The site includes a small visitor center, basic facilities, and a short walking trail that connects to other rock formations like Hippo’s Yawn. Best photographed in early morning or late afternoon when the curved surface catches dramatic shadows.
