Cherokee National Forest Bald River Falls Backcountry Access
Gateway to Tennessee's tallest wilderness waterfall.
This backcountry access route follows old Forest Service roads deep into Cherokee National Forest’s Bald River Gorge Wilderness area, leading to the spectacular 90-foot Bald River Falls. The trail branches off Forest Road 210 near Tellico Plains, climbing through mixed hardwood and pine forests with seasonal views of the Unicoi Mountains. Key waypoints include Baby Falls at mile 4 and the technical descent to Bald River Falls overlook, where the river plunges through a narrow sandstone gorge.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, but 4WD is recommended for the creek crossings and muddy sections common spring through early summer. Best accessed May through October, with peak fall colors in mid-October. No permits required for day use, but overnight camping requires dispersed camping in designated areas. Stock up in Tellico Plains — it’s your last resupply for 40 miles. You’ll gain access to some of Tennessee’s most pristine waterfalls and wilderness solitude just miles from civilization.
