Mississippi River Levee Heritage Road Vicksburg to Natchez

This 85-mile levee road traces the Mississippi River’s east bank through some of the most blood-soaked soil in America, where Grant’s army slogged through bottomland swamps to take Vicksburg and change the course of the Civil War. The route follows maintenance roads atop Corps of Engineers levees, passing Grand Gulf Military Park where ironclad gunboats once dueled, and threading between crumbling plantation mansion ruins that Spanish moss has claimed back from the cotton kings who built them.

Easy driving on maintained gravel and dirt levee roads, suitable for any vehicle with modest clearance. The real challenge is navigation — some sections require Corps permits for access, and spring floods can wash out bridges with little warning. Best driven fall through early spring when river levels are stable and weather cooperates. No camping on the levees themselves, but Windsor Ruins and other historic sites make worthy stops. Bring cameras and history books — you’re rolling through the epicenter of American drama where fortunes rose and fell with the river’s moods.
