Tallahala Creek Wildlife Management Area Sand Hills Loop

Deep sand and Civil War history in the pine barrens

Moderate

The Tallahala Creek bottoms have sheltered outlaws, deserters, and moonshiners for over 150 years, and today they’ll test your sand driving skills through some of Mississippi’s most pristine longleaf pine habitat. This 18-mile loop winds through deep sugar sand two-tracks that connect historic creek crossings, with the old Shubuta Bridge ruins marking the halfway point where bootleggers once cached their wares during Prohibition.

Moderate difficulty with several technical sand climbs that’ll bog down anything without proper tire pressure and momentum. Stock high-clearance 4WD with all-terrain tires minimum, but aired-down mud tires make life easier in the deep stuff. Spring and fall offer the best conditions when the sand firms up slightly. No permits required, but dispersed camping is allowed along the creek. Bring recovery gear and extra water — cell service is nonexistent once you drop into the creek bottoms. You’ll earn solitude in some of Mississippi’s wildest country.
