Bogue Homa Swamp Wildlife Management Area Cypress Bottom Trail
Last glimpse of primeval Mississippi swampland
Bogue Homa Swamp preserves 2,400 acres of Mississippi’s vanishing bottomland hardwood forest, where 500-year-old bald cypress trees tower above dark water channels that haven’t changed since Choctaw hunting parties paddled these waters. The 12-mile trail system follows raised timber roads built in the 1940s for selective logging, now serving as the only dry-land access into this primeval swamp ecosystem. Key waypoint is the “Cathedral Grove” at mile 7, where ancient cypress buttresses create natural columns reaching 120 feet skyward.
Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent rainfall—standing water makes sections impassable during winter and spring floods. Standard SUV sufficient in dry conditions, but high clearance recommended for year-round access. Managed by Mississippi Department of Wildlife for hunting and research access. Prime time is late summer through early winter when water levels drop and alligator activity peaks. No camping allowed, but this represents the last chance to experience Mississippi’s original landscape before European settlement. Bring bug spray and respect this living cathedral.
