The Pat Harrison Waterway District sprawls across south-central Mississippi’s longleaf pine ecosystem, where sugar sand meets creek bottoms in a landscape that’ll humble overconfident drivers. This 18-mile loop winds through the district’s backcountry maintenance roads, hitting the deep sand hills around Okatoma Creek and the technical creek crossings at Little Black Creek. The route passes the old CCC camp ruins near mile marker 8, where Depression-era workers carved roads through what locals still call “sugar sand country.”
This is legitimate technical terrain requiring aired-down tires, momentum management, and recovery gear. Stock 4WDs with good ground clearance can make it through in dry conditions, but the sand sections will test driver skill and vehicle capability. Best tackled April through October when creek levels are manageable. No permits required, but fuel up in Hattiesburg—nearest services are 25 miles from the trailhead.
