Raquette River Road

Deep Adirondack wilderness logging road

Difficult

Raquette River Road cuts through some of the Adirondacks’ most remote country, a 28-mile dirt track that parallels the Raquette River from Tupper Lake north toward Long Lake. Originally built as a logging road in the early 1900s, this route passes through dense spruce-fir forests and crosses multiple beaver dam complexes. The road skirts the edge of the Five Ponds Wilderness Area and offers access to several backcountry ponds, including the scenic Wolf Pond at mile marker 12 where old logging camp foundations still visible.

Difficult rating due to seasonal washouts, creek crossings, and sections that turn into axle-deep mud after rain. Stock 4WD with good ground clearance essential; low-range helpful for creek crossings and steep grades. No permits required as it crosses state forest land. Best traveled June through September when water levels are manageable. Multiple primitive camping spots along the route, but pack everything in and out. Cell service nonexistent once you leave Tupper Lake. This is real Adirondack backcountry – plan accordingly.
