Fish River Falls Tote Road
Aroostook timber country to thundering falls
Fish River Falls Tote Road winds 18 miles through the heart of Aroostook County’s timber country, following old logging spurs that once hauled white pine and spruce to the mills in Fort Kent. The route crosses the Fish River three times via solid timber bridges, with the crown jewel being the 40-foot Fish River Falls at mile 12 — a thundering cascade that powered sawmills for decades. Abandoned lumber camp foundations dot the route, including the ghost town of Glazier Brook Camp where rusted equipment still sits in the woods.
This is a moderate run requiring high-clearance 4WD for rocky creek crossings and muddy sections after rain. Best tackled June through October when water levels drop and black flies ease up. No permits needed, but bring recovery gear and extra fuel — cell service vanishes after mile 5. Multiple primitive camping spots exist near the falls, and brook trout fishing is excellent if you pack a rod. You’ll earn solitude few Maine trails can match.
