St. Francis Lake Tote Road
Deep woods logging road to hidden lake
The St. Francis Lake Tote Road cuts deep into Maine’s North Woods, following centuries-old logging routes through pristine wilderness that few ever see. This 18-mile gravel and dirt track branches off from the main Golden Road near Chesuncook and winds northeast through dense spruce-fir forests, crossing multiple beaver dam areas and boggy sections before reaching the crystal-clear waters of St. Francis Lake. The road passes through active timber management areas, so expect logging trucks during weekdays and seasonal gate closures.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance vehicles and patience for muddy sections, especially after rain. Stock SUVs can make it in dry conditions, but 4WD helps in the inevitable wet spots. Best tackled June through September when gates are open and roads are driest. No permits required, but bring maps since cell service is nonexistent and GPS can be spotty. The payoff is pristine backcountry camping at the lake and some of Maine’s finest wild brook trout fishing in waters that see maybe a dozen anglers per year.
