Fish River Chain of Lakes Route
Northern Maine's wildest lake country adventure
The Fish River Chain of Lakes Route winds through Aroostook County’s most remote corner, connecting Eagle Lake, Fish River Lake, and St. Froid Lake via old lumber camp roads that haven’t seen regular maintenance in decades. This network follows the Fish River drainage system through country so wild that moose outnumber people ten to one, passing abandoned logging camps where you can still find rusted cable and forgotten boom logs embedded in the shorelines.
Difficult terrain demands serious preparation — deep mud holes, washouts, and creek crossings that can strand unprepared drivers for days. Stock 4WD with recovery gear essential, plus extra fuel since there’s nothing for 60 miles. Best accessed June through September when water levels drop. No permits required but notify locals of your plans. What you earn is access to native brook trout lakes that few anglers ever see, plus camping spots where the northern lights dance across water so clear you can see bottom at 20 feet.
