Cobscook Bay Shore Road
Tidal wilderness at the edge of America
Cobscook Bay Shore Road threads between massive tidal flats and rocky coastline in the far reaches of Down East Maine, where 20-foot tides create a constantly changing landscape of exposed mudflats and rushing channels. This little-known route follows old fish camp roads and logging spurs through Quoddy Head State Park’s backcountry, passing abandoned sardine canneries and weathered fishing shacks that tell the story of Maine’s maritime heritage. The road winds through dense fog-shrouded spruce forests before breaking out onto dramatic headlands with views across to New Brunswick.
An easy to moderate trail suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though wet conditions can make sections slippery and challenging. Spring brings legendary Maine mud, so summer and early fall offer the best conditions. No permits needed, but respect private property signs—many sections cross working waterfront land. Bring layers for the notorious Down East weather and a tide chart if you plan to explore the exposed flats. This is authentic coastal Maine without the crowds, plus some of the best sea kayaking put-ins on the entire East Coast.
