Mississippi River Ensley Bottoms Sand Ridge Loop
Technical sand loop through historic river bottoms
The Ensley Bottoms stretch along the Mississippi River south of Memphis offers some of the most challenging sand driving in Tennessee. These old river terraces, carved by centuries of flooding, create a maze of deep sand two-tracks that wind through cottonwood forests and open meadows. The main loop follows old logging roads and hunting tracks, with the infamous “Sugar Sand Pit” section that’s swallowed more than a few overconfident drivers attempting it without momentum.
This is solid intermediate territory requiring 4WD low-range, aired-down tires, and recovery gear. Spring floods can make sections impassable until late May, while summer heat makes the sand brutally soft. Best tackled fall through early spring when the sand firms up. No camping allowed, but it’s a perfect half-day technical challenge that’ll test your sand driving skills without the commitment of a multi-day expedition.
