Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park Backcountry Fire Road Network

Hidden fire roads through river bluff country

Moderate

Meeman-Shelby stretches across 13,467 acres of Mississippi River bottomland and Chickasaw Bluff terrain, laced with a network of fire access roads that most visitors never see. The main backcountry loop connects the park’s remote camping areas through dense hardwood forest, crossing seasonal creeks and climbing onto the 100-foot bluffs overlooking the Mississippi. The real challenge comes at Poplar Tree Lake, where the old CCC road drops into a steep ravine that’ll test your diff locks and low-range gearing.

Moderate difficulty with some technical sections requiring 4WD and decent ground clearance. The bluff climbs get steep and loose during wet conditions, while creek crossings can be tricky after heavy rains. Spring wildflower season offers the best scenery, but summer and fall provide more reliable trail conditions. Park entry fee required, and you’ll need to check in at the visitor center for backcountry access. Solid cell service near the main park areas, but expect dead zones in the deeper hollows. Primitive camping allowed in designated areas with advance reservations.
