Fontainebleau State Park
This 2,800-acre park sits on a peninsula jutting into Lake Pontchartrain, featuring the ruins of Bernard de Marigny’s sugar mill from the 1820s and some of the largest live oak trees in Louisiana. The campground offers 126 sites with hookups scattered under the ancient oak canopy, plus a beach, fishing pier, and nature trails. The mill ruins and old lighthouse foundation make for interesting exploration when you’re not running forest roads.
Located 45 minutes from New Orleans via the Causeway, this makes a good base camp for exploring Louisiana State Arboretum trails or the Maurepas Swamp area. The park can get busy on weekends with locals, but weekday camping is usually available. High winds off the lake can make tent camping challenging during frontal passages.
