Kaituna Valley Track

The Kaituna Valley Track plunges into the heart of Tararua Forest Park, following old logging roads that haven’t seen regular maintenance since the timber crews pulled out in the 1970s. Deep ruts, fallen trees, and washouts are standard fare on this gnarly route that climbs through virgin podocarp forest toward the main divide. The notorious Dobson Creek crossing about 15km in has turned back plenty of under-prepared rigs — what looks like a simple creek ford can become a muddy trap that’ll swallow your diff housing if you’re not careful.

This is Difficult terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD with decent ground clearance and traction aids. Winch recommended for the creek crossings and inevitable mud holes. Access is via Gladstone Road, but check with DOC for closures during lambing season (August-October). Winter access is often impossible due to snow on the higher sections. Pack chainsaw if you’re serious about getting through — there’s always fresh windfall blocking the track. Reward is pristine backcountry camping among 800-year-old rimu trees where you won’t see another soul for days.
