Rimutaka Forest Park Summit Road

Historic railway incline turned challenging 4WD route

Moderate

The old Rimutaka Incline railway bed now serves as a rugged 4WD route across the Rimutaka Range between Upper Hutt and Wairarapa. Built in 1878, this engineering marvel used a unique Fell locomotive system to haul trains up the brutal 1-in-15 gradient. Today’s track follows the original rail formation through cuttings blasted from solid rock, past the remains of Summit Station, and through the partially collapsed Summit Tunnel. The route descends through native beech forest toward Cross Creek, with several original trestle bridge foundations still visible.

The track requires genuine 4WD capability for steep, loose sections and seasonal washouts, particularly on the eastern descent. Winter conditions can be treacherous with snow and ice above 400 meters. DOC maintains basic facilities at Summit Station site, but drivers should carry recovery gear, extra fuel, and emergency supplies. The historical significance combined with technical driving and Wellington region accessibility makes this a must-do for Kiwi 4WDers interested in industrial heritage. Gates lock at dusk, so plan accordingly.
